Why Design Systems Matter
A design system is more than a component library — it's the single source of truth for how your product looks, feels, and behaves. As teams scale and products grow, the absence of a design system leads to inconsistency, duplicated effort, and slower development cycles.
Starting with Foundations
Every scalable design system starts with solid foundations: a well-defined color palette, typography scale, spacing system, and grid. These tokens become the building blocks for every component and layout. Tools like Figma variables and Tailwind CSS make it easier than ever to maintain these foundations across design and code.
Component Architecture
Components should be built with composition in mind. Instead of creating monolithic, highly-specific components, break them into atomic pieces that can be combined flexibly. This approach reduces maintenance burden and makes the system more adaptable to new requirements.
Governance and Adoption
The hardest part of a design system isn't building it — it's getting people to use it. Establish clear contribution guidelines, regular review cycles, and visible documentation. A design system that nobody uses is just a side project.
